Wow, the week flew by without a post. Sorry to disappoint my Deah Readuhs, but it's been a dull week.

Yesterday (Canada Day) was a busy one. I got up early and got on the bus to go all the way over to Saanich Municipal Hall to pay my property taxes, since I was such a lazybones and didn't pay them the moment I got the notice. 10% penalty for being just a few hours late is substantial. On the way back I stopped at London Drugs and bought two cases of Clif Bars for The Desert. They were on sale, a dozen for $18 which is a pretty good price. I could live on just those and water at Burning Man but I think I might take some oatmeal too.

After I got home, I packed up some junk food and Aki and I went to Gyro Park. We got some ginger beer at Pepper's (glad to see some places still sell it) and I got some bread and pate, because I hadn't eaten all day. We made up a driftwood palisade and Aki made sand castles, whipped imaginary enemies with a length of kelp, wrote out wishes on scraps of paper he put in the empty ginger beer bottles which we later threw into the sea, and climbed on the big weird concrete animals they have there. I got very very sunburned, especially on my legs and arms. My knees are in really bad shape. We had an ice cream and went home.

After supper we played Survive, a board game from the 80s some of you might remember - an island is disintegrating and the people on it must ride boats or swim to safety, but sea serpents and sharks are waiting to eat them after whales knock them off the boats. The game is over when a volcano explodes, boiling or burning everyone who has not made it to one of the adjoining islands. A cruel but funny game. Then Aki and I watched Dr. Phibes Rises Again, the inferior but still OK sequel where the Abominable Dr. P goes to Egypt. About 10:00 we set off some fireworks - I had found them in the pocket of a pair of pants I bought at VV, they were Screecheroos that had been doctored by some Bad Kid (his mom must have given the pants away while he was away at reform school or finding God or something). Some worked normally, some detonated right away - every one's a winnah! Later we watched the upper half of the fireworks exploding over downtown. After a shower I read Aki more of The Hobbit, which we have just started.

I'm going to miss days like that day. I have to remind myself that they don't come again, whether the chances for them end in a matter of months or years. They should be enjoyed as and when they come.

Is there any way to tell (in advance) that pate has gone bad? Just asking, I feel fine actually.

I'm disappointed! Betty expected back today, but she will not be back until Saturday. Beh weh weh.

I am well and truly annoyed. I snagged a CD at Vincent de Paul at lunch - the original soundtrack to the original Batman TV show - even popped a look at the CD itself, saw "Batman", and bought it for $2.00. When I looked at it again it was the soundtrack to the 1980s film, you know the one with crap on it by Prince (as the artist was then known). Bugger. But the cover looks neat, great still from the period, even looks as if Robin is groping Adam West through his satin shorts. "Holy hole in a doughnut, Batman!"

I also snagged a copy of The Informed Heart by Bruno Bettelheim, so I can assuage my anger at not being able to hear the tune "Batusi a-go go" by reading accounts of the breakdown of human behaviour in death camps.

Do you suppose this old album is out on the Net somewhere? If some kind soul could make a CD of the music for me, I would give you the case with cover....

So, is anyone going to the Gothvic "Crap Swap" tonight? I am, now....
