A Vancouver book store that has been a fixture in downtown Vancouver for nearly 20 years – the Granville Book Company – has gone out of business.

There is a hand-lettered sign taped to the front door:

The Granville Book Company is dissolved.
February 14, 1986 to July 7, 2005.
RIP

"Their street died," says Cathy Duthie of Duthie Books – itself a long-time Vancouver book landmark – which shrank from 10 stores to just a single store in Kitsilano in 1999.

Duthie also notes that most people who go to the Granville Mall aren't there to buy books. "They're all going to the bars and getting drunk."

And she says the Granville Book Company had strong competition – from a Chapters less than two blocks away, and a Book Warehouse three blocks away.

"All book stores have a lot of competition now," she says. "We've got it from Costcos and the Safeways and the Bays. And they're all undercutting us."

Commercial rents have been going up in many retail areas of Vancouver, especially in the city's downtown core. There are several empty stores on either side of the Granville Book Company.

The Granville Book Company was employee-owned and operated – open until midnight 364 days a year.
