Once upon a time, politicians' private lives were off limits, not because of any law, but simply because of an unspoken agreement amongst newsmen. So nobody raked JFK's muck and reported on his penchant for Other Women. But by Richard Nixon's rein, the gloves were off. As our representatives, and representatives of our society, politicians must abide by societal morality at all times, not only when they are in the public eye. Morality must not only be done, it must be seen to be done. Defender of the Faith and all that.
To my mind, the same applies to anyone in the public eye. They cannot be held to a lesser morality simply because they are in the public eye.
