Just to keep my paddle in...
Hardback or paperback?
Paperback, because they're cheaper.
Highlight or underline?
It is sacrilege to write in books. Underline or sideline only in extreme cases, and then only in pencil.
Lewis or Tolkien?
Both get tiresome with repetition. Tolkien, since he is less overt with the ideology he wants to ram down you.
E.B. White or A.A. Milne?
Never bothered much with either.
T.S. Eliot or e.e. cummings?
Eliot.
Stephen King or Dean Koontz?
Aie, Stephen King but I have other ways to spend my time.
Chain bookstore or independent?
Independent, except sometimes I can find OK things on the remainder table at Chapters.
Have you ever used an online service like Abebooks to search for or order a book?
No.
Fantasy or Science Fiction?
Hard SF.
Horror or Suspense?
Horror.
Bookmark or dogear?
Would like to bookmark, but usually end up dogearing.
Hemingway or Faulkner?
Sigh, Hemingway.
Fitzgerald or Steinbeck?
Steinbeck.
Homer or Plato?
I have to confess ignorance here. So smite me with your bloomin' lyre.
Geoffrey Chaucer or Edmund Spenser?
Chaucer. But not for long.
Alphabetize:
No, I sort by subject and group authors within the subject.
Dustjacket: On or Off?
On.
Novella or epic?
Novella or short story.
John Grisham or Scott Turow?
Ick, no.
J.K. Rowling or Lemony Snicket?
Snicket.
John Irving or John Updike?
Uh, uh, uh-duh, uh... sorry, but the only nervy nerdy middle-aged New Englander I ever cared for drowned himself earlier this year.
Fiction or non-fiction?
Depends on subject.
Historical biography or historical romance?
Biography.
A few pages per sitting or finish at least a chapter?
A chapter if I have time.
Short story or creative non-fiction essay?
Both. Depends on the subject. But I am still a little unsure as to what "creative non-fiction" is supposed to be.
"It was a dark and stormy night" or "Once upon a time"?
It was a dark and stormy night.
Buy or borrow?
Borrow if I can't buy, though with buying I don't have to worry if something gets buried in a bookslide.
Book reviews or word of mouth?
Both, though I don't pay much attention to either.
