DENVER - The widow of gonzo journalist Hunter S. Thompson has announced plans to fulfill the writer's long-cherished wish for an explosive tribute after his death.
Anita Thompson said Tuesday that her late husband's ashes will be blasted from a cannon on the grounds of their Aspen-area home sometime this August.
"It's expensive, but worth every penny," Anita Thompson said. "I'd like to have several explosions. He loved explosions."
The 67-year-old Thompson shot himself on Feb. 20. Some friends and family speculated that he had planned his suicide in advance because of declining health. The author of new journalism tomes like Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas was reportedly suffering from pain caused by a broken leg and a hip-replacement.
The artillery send-off will be part of a larger public celebration of Thompson's life, many details of which remain to be worked out, Anita Thompson said.
However, she revealed that the cannon itself will be attached to a 16-metre-high sculpture of the writer's "gonzo fist" emblem (a clenched fist and forearm), which itself will be mounted on a 30-metre-high pillar. The entire structure will remain a permanent monument on the property.
She added that planning for the tribute has been guided by a video Thompson and long-time friend Ralph Steadman recorded in the late 1970s. In it, the two visited a Hollywood funeral home and began developing the cannon scheme.
I sigh with envy at this. "He loved explosions", what an epitaph....
