These are all from the altfriday5, which I have not done in a while. Skipped some, too.

***
Reason

1. Have you ever studied reasoning as a skill? If so, where did you study it (school, university, home)?
No.
2. Do you consider yourself someone who acts according to rational principles?
Yes.
3. Describe a time when you acted from passion rather than reason. How do you feel about that choice now?
Breaking up my marriage (though reason came later). Was probably the right thing to do but that doesn't mean I feel especially good about it (nto that staying where I was would have made me feel good either.)
4. Describe a time when you acted from reason rather than passion. Again, how do you feel about that choice now?
Getting married in the first place. I regret ever having done it, though experience is cheap at any price, they say.
5. Is there a place for irrationality in an adult life?
Sure; plenty of time to regret it, as well.

***
Citizen

1. Which country or countries are you a citizen of? How did you attain that citizenship (birth, naturalization, inheritance)
Canada, by birth
2. For which countries do you have a passport? Have you ever had trouble getting a passport?
Canada. No.
3. Have you ever needed to apply for special permission (i.e., visas or other clearances) to enter another country? If yes, tell us a bit about it.
Got an employment visa for "instructor" when I worked in Japan. But the Japanese Consulate took care of all that.
4. Have you ever had trouble entering a country (couldn't get a visa, turned back at the border, etc.)? If yes, tell us a bit about it.
I've only ever been refused entry once, into East Germany: http://ltmurnau.livejournal.com/114514.html. But last year I ran into some stupid trouble at the US border - travel into the Great Satan is becoming more and more irksome. http://ltmurnau.livejournal.com/100993.html
5. Have you ever had trouble leaving a country (lost your passport with your entry stamp, not accepted back by your country of residence, etc.)? If yes, tell us a bit about it.
No - people seem happy to get rid of me.

***
Pictures

1. Have you ever owned a camera? If yes, what kinds (film, digital, compact, SLR, etc.)?
Yes, all kinds.
2. How often do you take photos? Why or why not? (Bonus: post a link to a favourite photo that you took.)
I take photos sometimes. Usually my cameras are kept hidden from me.
3. How often are photos taken of you? Why or why not? (Bonus: post a link to a favourite photo of you.)
I like looking at photos of me, even though they are all awful.
4. What do you tend to take photos of? What draws you to take a photo? Why?
People.
5. What are photos of you generally like (e.g. candid, posed, at parties, on holiday)?
Candid, on most any occasion. Photos of me taken with a digital camera seem to have an inbuilt Photoshop filter with a title like "38% Drunk" or "Moronify".

***
Water

1. How much water does your household use in a day? (You can use this calculator: http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/in_depth/629/629/5086298.stm to figure it out.)
Way too much. I don't need to calculate that.
2. How much do you think about or are aware of your water use and saving water on a daily basis?
Every day.
3. Do you have any water-saving devices in your household (e.g. brick in toilet, water-saving shower head, etc.)?
Yes.
4. What do you actively do to conserve water (e.g. turn water off while brushing teeth, take quicker showers, flush less)?
Turn water off for brushing teeth. No flush for Nubmer One. Take quick showers.
5. How available is water in your area? Are there ever any water shortages? Where does your water come from?
No shortage for home use, but every summer there is a drought and outside use of water (gardens, lawns, etc.) is curtailed. I have no problem complying with this but other people seem to - I remember one April 30 wathcing this guy down the street from me washing his house with a hose, IN THE RAIN, because the following day water restrictions came into effect and he would not be allowed to do that.

***
Vacation

1. How much vacation are you allowed to take from your current occupation?
About 20 days.
2. Do you tend to use up your alloted vacation time, or let it build up? Why?
I didn't use to use it, but now I spend it all in the summer to be with Aki or go to Burning Man.
3. Do you tend to take your vacation in bits and pieces, or in big lumps? Why?
Both - I have a lot of long weekends in the summer, and one big lump to go to Nevada.
4. What do you take vacation days off for? Events? Mental health days?
Time off to be with family.
5. What would your dream vacation be?
If I had great health and no lack of money? Not sure, maybe a trek in Tuva/Mongolia or a long visit to the Mediterranean - long cruise through the American Southwest - maybe all of these.

***
Pi

1. Do you know one of the formulas to calculate the circumference of a circle? Prove it. ;-)

"Three point one four one five nine two six."
3. Have you seen the movie π (http://imdb.com/title/tt0138704/)? If so, what did you think of it?
Yes! It's one of my favourite movies.
4. Did you know about Pi Day before reading this post? If yes, did you celebrate it this year? Have you ever celebrated it?
Yes. No. No, what would be a good way to do that?

Wish Fulfilment

1. Picture yourself in the most relaxing situation possible. Where are you, and what are you doing?
Floating in a liquid, nice and thick and warm
Floating where there is no pleasure and there is no harm
Life would be so pleasant if we all could be
Helpless hopeless creatures just marching to the sea..."

2. If you could change one thing about yesterday, what would it be?
I got more sleep.
3. Imagine that an inanimate object comes to life and starts talking to you. What is it, and what does it say?
My telephone. It tells me that there is no mail for me today.
4. Suppose you could tell one person anything, without fear of negative consequences. Who would you talk to and what would you say? Why?
I'm gonna have to think about that one.
5. Make a wish: what does your genie bring you to eat for lunch today?
Hot open-face chicken sandwich, with lots of gravy and fries.

***
Roomies

1. Do you live with roommates* right now? If yes, who? Why do (or don't) you have roommates?
No.
2. Who was the best roommate you ever had? Why?
Gary. He put up with a lot.
3. Who was the worst roommate you ever had? Why?
Not roommate, but the senile old bag that lived next door to me and never slept, and never shut up, and never stopped hitting the walls with the broom when the people she hallucinated came out of hatches to get her...
4. Do you like having roommates? Why or why not?
Really depends on the rommate, but I prefer living alone.
5. Are you a good roommate? Why or why not?
I think so. I'm normally pretty clean and quiet, if a little disorderly.

(*where roommate means someone who shares your room, house, or apartment with whom you do not have a romantic or familial relationship)

***
Art

1. Tell us about the last time you went to an art exhibition, installation, or museum. How often do you go to see art? Do you seek it out, or have it forced upon you?
It's been a while, but mostly because nothing interesting has been on. If there is, I seek it out.
2. Which periods or styles of art do you particularly like? Why?
Dada and surrealist art, performance art, kinetic sculpture
3. Which periods or styles of art do you particularly dislike? Why?
Most abstract and minimalist stuff (boring and pretentious), op-art (hurts my eyes), most religious art (can't decode it)
4. Do you make art yourself? Which kinds of art?
Yes, I make or have made all kinds of stamps, eraser carvings, screen prints, metal sculpture, kinetic sculpture, metal castings, artists trading cards, postcards, etc... Besides the metalworking stuff, I mostly write or design games to be creative these days.
5. What role does art play in your life in general?
Fair to middlin'. I like being creative and I like it when people notice, but that's optional.

Questions on questions

1. What was the last question someone asked you (not including this one)? What was your answer?

"What do you want me to look out for in the auction?" "Things on the Russo-Polish War."
3. Do people often ask you questions? Why or why not? How many questions would you estimate you get asked in an average day?
I get asked a lot of things, usually because I've been around here a while. Probably field up to 25 serious questions a day, most requiring thought.
4. Do you often ask questions? Why or why not? How many questions would you estimate you ask in an average day?
I ask when I think I have to, but I don't like to. I ask fewer than I am asked, I think.
5. When you hear a question, do you feel compelled to answer it?
Yes, always.

***
Medical tests

1. Which STDs do you routinely get tested for?
None. I'm quite well-behaved.
2. When was your last test?
Got tested for chlamydia in 1988.
3. Have you ever had an STD? Which one(s)?
No.
4. Have you ever had a "scare", where someone had or may have had an STD that might have been transmitted to you? If yes, tell us a bit about it.
In early 1989 I had an episode of epididymitis [http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Epididymitis], from a urinary tract infection I am sure I got off a toilet seat. They tested me for chlamydia, but I could certainly tell them it wasn't from having sex. It fucking hurt.
5. How knowledgable are you about STDs and testing for them? Are you happy with your level of knowledge? What were or are your primary sources of information about STDs?
I'm happy with what I know, and confident I could find out anything I needed to.
