OK, latest meme follows...
Where were you when.....
1. When John F. Kennedy was shot (11/22/1963)
Swimming around in my father's balls.
2. When Mt. St. Helens blew (5/18/1980)
In bed, waking up. The sound of the volcano and the shaking made me think a truck full of gravel was driving by outside our house.
3. When the space shuttle Challenger exploded (1/28/1986)
In university. My friend Richard made a postcard collage of the image with the caption, "it's still worth it."
4. When the 7.1 earthquake hit San Francisco (10/7/1989)
Getting ready to leave Berlin, after being one of the last people to be refused entry into East Berlin.
5. When the Berlin Wall fell (11/7/1989)
Back in Ottawa, getting ready to leave my Army job. Ruing that I didn't stick around in Berlin a little longer.
6. When the Gulf War began (1/16/1991)
In the teacher's room at Kudamatsu Junior High School, watching the male teachers goggling at the TV footage of the bombing. At the time there was a big debate about whether the Japanese military (which technically does not exist) should help out in some way, or should they just cut a cheque.
7. When OJ Simpson was chased in his White Bronco (6/17/1994)
At work, studiously ignoring this non-event.
8. When Oklahoma City was bombed (4/19/1995)
At work. Most of the time, I'm at work when things happen.
9. When Princess Di was killed (8/31/1997)
We were having a wake for William S. Burroughs, who had recently died, at Gary's studio. The news about Princess Di broke in the middle of the party and ruined what was a fine memorial for a thoughtful weird old man.
10. When Bush was first announced President (11/7/2000)
On Bainbridge Island, visiting friends. I remember thinking at the time that though he looked rather a moron, he probably had good advisors and that things would be OK.
11. When the 6.8 earthquake hit Nisqually, WA (2/28/2001)
At my desk. I suppose I should have told everyone in the office to duck and cover, but it didn't seem like such a big quake to me - had bigger ones flash by while I was in Japan and no one even blinked. Mind you, I was 100 miles away from the epicentre.
12. When terrorists destroyed the World Trade Center (9/11/2001)
Heard about it on the bus to work.
13. When Columbia disintegrated during re-entry over Texas. (2/1/2003)
At work, natch.
