Last night I was talking to Anne online and we were discussing the skewed view of people that can emerge when one knows them mostly (or only) by what they write on LJ.

Granted, one of the twisted appeals of the Internet is that one can re-invent oneself in twenty different ways, on purpose, and "snarky" seems to be the default setting for this process.

But equally obviously misleading is the partial picture that emerges when people post for semi-public consumption what truly happens to be uppermost in their minds at the time, or accounts of things that stand out in their minds. To go by some of the LJs I've seen, I REALLY hope that the truth is otherwise!

As you all know, the devil is in the details, and most of the details of anyone's life are devilishly tedious. Obviously I have lived most of my life without broken bones, bad movies and books do not always reduce me to almost-incoherent rages, and I don't gallivant with teenagers to the Hamtaro Theme Song every night. But I don't really feel like telling you what I had for supper last night, even a made-up menu, because it's of little consequence to me (unless I happen to miss a meal entirely!) and I don't think that you would be interested. (OK, it was curry rice.)

I'll make a deal with you, though: I will agree to write what I write here, and you will agree to remember that what you choose to read here, even in my userinfo, does not give you a complete picture of the enigma that is "Lieutenant Murnau". But if there is anything else you want to know, just ask and I will tell you (compromising information such as credit card numbers excepted, obviously!).

The high-top canvas shoes? How much?

There's a shop across from Sacred Herb downtown that sells nothing but Chuck Taylors. I couldn't afford 'em.

Thanks, I will check it out if I can get a lift there. Still need some ankle support even as the foot-bone heals (doc said it's in more than two pieces, but it should be OK in about a month - no reason to change my deserty plans).

Deserts are flat, and have few sharp edges. Those points alone recommend them to my attention.
