LJ Interests meme results

  1. bismuth:
Important component of the casting alloy I use. Bismuth is one of the few metals that expand on cooling, which makes it useful for casting because it takes up more detail from the mold on cooling rather than less. Reference: http://www.livejournal.com/users/ltmurnau/53185.html
  2. current 93:
A band I don't follow them religiously. The "apocalyptic folk" genre of music is interesting, though.
  3. ephemera:
Paper ephemera, specifically. I make it but try not to collect it - too much of it flying around, but it's important as a social document. If you want to know what people were really thinking about in 1913, go read some postcards, pamphlets and comic books from that time. Also compare to what J. G. Ballard calls "insivisble literature: http://www.livejournal.com/users/ltmurnau/19598.html
  4. hectography:
LJ tells me that I am the only one with this listed interest (another unique interest of mine is "pantzooka", but that's because I invented the thing). Hectography is a printing process using a pad of gelatin to retain and transfer aniline ink marks to moistened paper. References to the interest are here:

  5. klaus nomi:
Certainly one of the more interesting acts of the late 1970s. I'd call him a gimmick if he weren't apparently so serious about what he did. One day soon I will arrange a viewing party of The Nomi Song, the first documentary made about him, over 20 years after his death. Klaus' Lime Tart will be served if I can get it together in time.

  6. monty cantsin:
Oh boy, what can I say about this Bad Boy of Neoism. It's all here:
    http://www.livejournal.com/users/ltmurnau/29584.html et seq.
    http://www.livejournal.com/users/ltmurnau/87541.html
  7. philip k. dick:
One of the most interesting and brain-twisting SF writers, evar. 95%+ of all SF writing is crap, but even his crap writing was better than the usual author's best efforts. I think it's a tribute to his skill (or to Hollywood's ability to miss the point entirely) that all the screen adaptations of his works have failed miserably to convey what he was about.
  8. simulations:
Main interest is political-military game simulations. See "wargames" below.
  9. the residents:
I haven't written about them in this journal, but if you have heard of even half of the musical stuff I'm interested in and have written about here you will be hip to The Residents. Making wild stuff for 30 years and still going strong.
  10. wargames:
References to this mutant form of train-spotting abound in this journal. I design and publish my own games, write variants and reviews of other peoples' games, and sometimes even play them.

Currant 93: Peter loves them, and they (or he) drive(s) me mad. Really, Peter isn't allowed to play them when I'm around, I totally freak out.

Thanks for the comment in my journal! I am running a small social experiment to see how many people point out my spelling error.

The Residents are AMAZING!

I noticed it but thought it kinder to say nothing.
Did you delete the entry? I can't see it now.

Yep, I saw the Residents in Seattle a few years ago. No idea when they will return but I want to be there. I found a second-hand copy of "Icky Flix" a couple of weeks ago, now I can enjoy "Hello Skinny" any time I want!

I did delete. I was trying to get a rise out of a couple of snotty smartypants, not from people that I like!

I have Icky Flix, Eskimo and The Commerical Album DVDs. All are great. Icky Flix is one of the disks I slip in and just let run during the day. There will always be something interesting playing or something interesting to look at.

Were you at the concert in the Liquid Lounge? I was there too!

Aw, c'mon. Getting a rise out of snotty-smartypants people on LJ is easier than rolling out of bed in the morning; it may even take fewer keystrokes.

I want to get the Eskimo DVD. I didn't know there was a Commercial Album DVD. Does that mean they have come up with 36 more little one-minute videos?

I saw them at the Experience Music Project in April 2001, think it was called the Big Sky Room or something like that. I'd been waiting a long time for that concert.

I know. But, I'm an old softy. I can't take it!

The Commercial Album DVD is amazing they got a bunch of artists to produce films and videos to go along with the songs. There are actually 56 different films on it. Not all of them are great, but they're so short it doesn't matter.

I was at that concert! We are both cool.

Yes. Yes, we are both cool.

I must look up the Commercial Album DVD - never seen it in a store.
