Oh God, where to start...
Jul. 27th, 2005 09:46 am... is how I feel these days when I think about all I have to get done in the next while. Fortunately I have help.

Remembrance of Posts Past
Jul. 18th, 2005 02:36 pmI looked up what I was doing or writing about at this time one and two years ago.
2004 - writing about going to Luminara, and about Diogenes.

2003 - writing about being in pain from my broken foot, and having ice cream with

What am I doing now? Short sitrep:
The papers were signed on Thursday the 14. I initialled each page (26 of them) and signed it all, in duplicate, in purple ink. It always enraged her whenever I used anything other than black ink to sign something - she thought you could get in trouble for signing cheques in green ink, for example. Maybe you do in Japan, except they don't even use cheques. I don't think she ever got used to the relative anarchy that is Canada.
Friday I took off work to spend with Aki. I dropped off at my lawyer's office a bank draft for a very large amount of $$$, all that was left of my ICBC money for my gimpy leg and a bit more, signed more papers then we had BBQ pork on rice at Wah Lai Yuen. Then we went to Fernwood and hung around, watched movies made brownies played games including hours of late night poker (he won $6.05). Sunday we went to Gyro Park for the Gothnic, it was fun!
Tomorrow (Tuesday) my mom and I will spend the day with him. Wednesday AM he takes off. We decided it was best I not see him off at the airport - too traumatic. I'd prefer that his last hours spent with me this year be nice ones.
He will be back in less than a year, and depending on how he's done and how he's feeling, I may apply to keep him here. My lawyer very astutely and not for the first time pointed out, when I was freaking out a couple of weeks ago, that here and now is not the right time to fight a battle for him.
Beginning Wednesday I start moving back into Toothpaste Acres, I don't want the house to be empty even for a night. The following month will see a massive cleanout and cleanup and loads of work, not least in getting ready for the Nevada trip. I don't want to sit and brood, I have done enough of that over the last few years.
Meanwhile, Luminara - anyone planning on going? I have a great idea for a costume of a "rokuro-kubi", a Japanese ghost or demon with an extendable neck:

Apparently, unlike most ghosts and monsters, these are fun to have around: http://www.youkaimura.org/rokuro.htm

The Gay Divorcees
Jun. 16th, 2005 11:44 amBC's first same-sex divorce has been granted: http://vancouver.cbc.ca/regional/servlet/View?filename=bc_gay-divorce20050615. The marriage lasted less than two years.
Apparently this was not a test case to alter the law, either, because the Divorce Act only allows a man and a woman to part: "I had no idea I couldn't file for divorce. It just blew me away – the fact that we could legally get married, but we couldn't get divorced."
Obviously this was an administrative oversight, and the law has been altered so there's no problem now. Anyone can marry anyone, and split up with them too. But perhaps it could have been left in place - you fought so hard for the right to marry, now you have to keep the spouse 'till death do you part!
Just joking there, folks - I have never been down on gay marriage specifically, just the entire institution. Far be it from me to deny homosexuals an equal opportunity for wedded misery!

All Joy for Your Happy Weekend Amenity
Apr. 4th, 2005 11:22 amA nice weekend marred only by weird weather. After work on Friday I went to pick up Aki [oh yeah, I've been too busy having things happen to write about them - most of you know about this already but a quick recap: I moved out two weeks ago, living with Betty now. Papers aren't signed yet but a matter of time. I have no regrets except where Aki is concerned. Alea iacta est. Your mileage may vary. Screw you if it does beyond one standard deviation. No, not you, you over there.] and it was raining so hard I couldn't see the other side of the street clearly. Then it cleared up and got as cold as February. We had supper in Chinatown with Marc, who I have not seen in many years and who hadn't seen Aki since he was a little baby. Then we took the 70 out to Sayward and Gary picked us up, we hacked around building a little model of a Japanese destroyer and watching "Invasion Iowa", which was a pretty good joke. Aki loved petting the cats and dog, he isn't around animals much but really likes them, but later he got really itchy hands. Does this necessarily mean an allergy? He showed no other symptoms and never has, as far as I can recall.
In the morning we cast a few pieces in the workshop from some German aluminum molds I'd found and went into town for lunch. After won ton soup and an ice cream cone we went to the library to work on his project on comparative anatomy (humans vs. sting rays) for a bit. I took him home and went back to lay down for a bit before the big event Saturday night -
SHONEN KNIFE, LIVE IN VICTORIA AT LUCKY BAR!!!
It was great fun. I've been waiting to see them for about ten years, and every time they've been to Victoria I have missed them. I know it's only the beginning of April, but this was the best event I've seen all year. It was their last show of the North American tour - 29 shows in five weeks, and they were loud and fast and genki-ippai!
It was so crowded there wasn't room to do much more than bounce up and down, they played some new stuff but a lot of older favourites too - here is the setlist I can remember, in no particular order:
Konnichi Wa
Twist Barbie
Summertime Boogie
Map Master
Blue Oyster Cult
Bear up Bison
Tortoise Brand Pot Cleaner song (two versions, fast and faster)
ESP
Tomato Head
Cobra vs. Mongoose
Riding on the Rocket (my favourite)
I Wanna Be Sedated
Rubber Band
... that's all I can remember for now.
Good Times.

Petite Annonce
Dec. 22nd, 2003 09:35 pmI expect that my entries here will be irregular from now on, and most of them will be friends-only. For those of you who read this journal and are not Livejournal members, I understand it is now possible for you to get set up as a member without having to wheedle a code from an existing member, or paying Livejournal.com for all the bells and whistles you may not need.
For those of you who read this and are both Livejournal members and "meatspace" friends: many of you already know what's going on and I thank you for your friendship and support. It means a lot to me.
